Homeopathy differs from conventional medicine in how it defines symptoms, selects medicine, administers doses, and approaches costs.
In homeopathy, symptoms are seen as the body's effort to regain balance, so practitioners choose remedies that support rather than suppress these symptoms. This is rooted in the “Law of Similars,” which posits that a substance causing symptoms in a healthy person can help someone with similar issues. For example, Allium cepa, derived from red onion, can alleviate cold symptoms like a runny nose and watery eyes, unlike antihistamines that suppress these symptoms but may cause side effects like drowsiness.
Additionally, homeopathy acknowledges that individuals exhibit symptoms uniquely, meaning two people with the same illness may receive different remedies based on their specific symptom profiles—this approach is called Totality of Symptoms. In contrast, conventional medicine typically prescribes treatments based on a diagnosis.
Finally, homeopathic medicines are generally more affordable, with a cost between $10–$20 and contain multiple doses. They may have a longer shelf life, and a single medicine can address various conditions.
Homeopathic medicines are classified as drugs under U.S. federal law. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates the manufacturing, marketing, and sale of all homeopathic medicines. Homeopathic medicines are made by homeopathic manufacturing pharmacies according to standards and processes outlined in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States (HPUS), the official US homeopathic medicine manufacturing manual. The HPUS contains information necessary for proper identification of raw materials, techniques for remedy manufacture, and quality control measures.
Homeopathic medicines are FDA-regulated, non-drowsy, non-habit-forming, and non-toxic. The medicines also have no known side effects and no known drug interactions.
Although homeopathic medicines are derived from natural substances, not all natural medicine is homeopathic. What make a medicine homeopathic is how it is manufactured.
Homeopathy is not: herbalism; oriental medicine; vitamin supplements; flower essence; botanicals; and essential oils. It is not home remedies.
Homeopathy is a complete, scientific system of medicine, and it should not be confused with other natural therapies.
Homeopathic remedies cost on average $10–$20 for a bottle that contains multiple doses. Sometimes only a single dose of a medicine is needed to help the body restore health.
Medicines have an extended shelf life, and each may be used for several different conditions.
Homeopathy is practiced by a wide variety of healthcare practitioners including: acupuncturists; chiropractors; dentists; medical doctors; naturopathic physicians; nurse midwives; nurse practitioners; osteopaths; physician assistants; podiatrists; clinical homeopaths; registered nurses; and veterinarians.
Individual states regulate the practice of homeopathy, and each state’s laws and requirements for practice are different.
The first homeopathic consultation usually lasts one to two hours and can be as high as $700.00, depending on the practitioner’s skills and geographic location.
During the visit, the homeopath will review the client’s health history and attempt to elicit a full picture of the client’s symptoms — mental, emotional, and physical. Homeopathic medicines will be chosen to match the symptom profile. Follow-up visits usually occur every eight weeks but will vary depending on the client’s needs and the practitioner’s philosophy. A follow-up visit normally lasts 30 to 60 minutes.
Most of the time health insurance DOES NOT cover homeopathic consultations. However, check with your FSA or HSA.
At Hope Homeopathics, our mission is to provide hope and restoration to the broken. We believe in transforming lives by regulating the mind, emotions, and body holistically. Homeopathy paves the way.
